History, legends, ancient dominations and an artistic and natural heritage that leaves you breathless. This is Acireale. The city of the 100 bells, named so because of its many churches, houses the most beautiful carnival of Sicily and enchants all visitors with its baroque.
Its name derives from a legend that tells of the great love that united Aci in Galatea. The love between the two lit up the jealousy of the giant Polyphemus who threw on Aci’s body a gigantic boulder that crushed him.
The endless weeping of Galatea aroused the compassion of the gods who decided to turn Aci into a beautiful river. Acireale is full of enchanting landscapes and artistic structures of great value, such as the splendid Piazza Duomo dominated by the imposing baroque cathedral with its sundial and the silver statue of Santa Venera. Next to the Cathedral, there are also the suggestive Church of Saints Peter and Paul and the Baroque style Town Hall.
The northern part of the city, instead, hosts Villa Belvedere with its enchanting sculpture of Aci and Galatea and its incredible panorama. The historic center of Acireale offers, then, the opportunity to taste, in the many local, a typical dishes of the Acese tradition: an orange salad dressed with oil, salt, lemon and homegrown black olives.
